A new extension to Herlev Hospital
In 2011 Henning Larsen Architects with others won the international competition designing a new addition to Herlev Hospital. The project include emergency room and a woman-child center with pediatrics and maternity ward. The new design is largely focused on the healing effects of nature and open space. The project consists of three low circular buildings with rectangular bases, which create a number of interesting recreational areas and stand in sharp contrast to the existing 120 meter building, which has no outdoor spaces. The area in general will be green and open, inviting patients and visitors to enjoy the fresh air and stimulation of all senses. Healing architecture is well documented, and the hope is, that the new hospital will create a comfortable and pleasant environment for its users.
The building will have an approximate size of 52.000 squared meters, and will later be further expanded with an additional 6.100 including a chapel and a patient hotel. The circular designs offer new and exciting challenges for the steel design with custom components and out-of-the-box construction methods.
The project is designed with sustainability in mind and will be energy class 1.
