Not another blue box
The new IKEA store in Copenhagen has an aesthetic very different from the classic blue warehouse. The building is located with direct access to Dybbølsbro bridge as an integrated part of Copenhagen's western district and easily accessible by train or bike. Because of the placement of the warehouse, the design is kept light and green, and the public rooftop garden will function both as part of the green trail for pedestrians leading from Bernstoffsgade to Havneholmen as well as a boost to the biodiversity of the area. The façade is inspired by curtains, giving a glimpse into a living room and consists of big glass panels, white flat surfaces, and green plants.
The store opened in August 2023. See the photos from the grand opening here.
Connecting Dybbølsbro, shopping and rooftop park
KI was in charge of the structural design of the platform and bridge crossing Dybbølsbro and connecting IKEA to the Kaktus Towers on the other side as part of the green pedestrian trail.
The structure of the platform is a combination of composite beams and columns, steel and composite lattice girder soffit slab (filigran decks).
Clean composite design
Since the platform is considered an escape route in the event of fire, the columns had the extra high demand of being able to withstand fire for 2 hours. For this reason, composite steel-concrete columns were selected as opposed to just steel, since the concrete enables a design without added fire protection.
Furthermore, the architects wanted a clean design without any bracing which lead to selecting a moment resistance frame for lateral stability in both directions. As such, the connection between the beams and columns was made as a moment stiff joint to form moment resistance frames in both directions as often as possible.
