Simple and elegant design
The new 220 kV pylon, also known as the Ballerina, designed for Landsnet in Iceland is a single circuit high voltage overhead transmission tower. The focus of the project has been to create a beautiful pylon, which nicely blends into its surroundings.
The new design pylon consists of two main components – a tubular steel shaft and three tubular crossarms. The diameter of the tubular steel shaft varies from 1100 mm at the base to 300 mm at the top. Similarly, the crossarms are made of tapered tubular sections which are bent downwards to create an elegant expression. The simplicity of the construction is emphasized by ensuring that all mechanical connections and interfaces are ”hidden” within the tower creating smooth transition between each element.
The total height of the Ballerina pylon is 29 meters and the width is about 9 meters.
Our role
Development of design concept for cast nodes and crossarm in collaboration with ARA Engineering. Detail design of cast components (including 2D and 3D drawings). Final design of interfaces between castings and fabricated steel members (welded and bolted). Design of bolted connection between base and shaft section. Technical specifications including NDT requirements for castings.
The participants
The project is designed for Landsnet by ARA Engineers in collaboration with Hornsteinar Architects and KI as consulting engineers.
