P-Velliv – technically demanding parking garage with architectural lightness
The P-Velliv parking garage in Lyngby marks the first stage in a major development plan for the commercial area around Ulrikkenborg. It is a building that both contributes to the area's green transformation and adds architectural lightness to the cityscape – while also containing complex constructive solutions that have required both experience and innovation.
The parking garage is built on 11 staggered levels and contains a total of 209 parking spaces. The two upper levels are laid out as activity roofs with public access and living areas, connected to the terrain by an external staircase. Architecturally, the building appears light and transparent with a facade of perforated metal sheets in warm, reddish-brown shades, chosen in close dialogue with the municipality, users and developer. Various climbing plants have been planted along the facade and will over time create a vibrant and green frame.
KI's role: structural engineering with precision and creativity
KI was responsible for the structural engineering – a task that required special expertise. The parking garage is built on top of an existing basement, and the existing ground deck has been broken through to establish foundations for new columns. The solution involved, among other things, rebuilding and shortening existing prestressed TT decks, which were subsequently reinforced with specially designed steel brackets. A precise and tailor-made solution that ensures the transfer of forces from the original prestressing cables and maintains both load-bearing capacity and robustness.
"These are exactly the kinds of tasks that we thrive on at KI – where standard solutions are not an option. We have worked on a complex task where we have had to ensure the load-bearing capacity of an existing structure and adapt it to completely new conditions," says project manager Mikki Graffmann.
A concept with flexibility and future-proofing
P-Velliv is part of a parking garage concept developed in close collaboration between KI, NCC and Holscher Nordberg. The concept is based on prefabricated elements that ensure short construction times, low material consumption and a high degree of flexibility – both in relation to expansion and future transformation. This makes the building robust and future-proof, both structurally and functionally.
At KI, we have been involved in shaping the concept from the beginning and have put it into practice in this project through a focused and value-creating effort. For us, it's about combining technical strength with aesthetic understanding and ensuring solutions that not only work on paper, but in reality – also for many years to come.
Our role
KI was the structural engineer responsible for all structural design and a certified structural engineer.
